John Braithwaite (1811-1890) was born in England and by 1840, settled in Northwest Arkansas. Sometime about 1870, he “discovered” a sweet, crisp, and firm apple in his yard which kept well for several months as its skin darkened to an almost red-black color. Thus, the world-famous Arkansas Black got its name. The Braithwaite home (circa 1855) still stands as a private residence at the corner of Bella Vista Road and Braithwaite Street just north of downtown Bentonville.
